Tragedy struck a group of tourists in Diani, Kwale County, when one of them drowned while swimming in the Indian Ocean.
According to police, the victim, a Polish national identified as Borucka Grazyna Janina, had been swimming with fellow Polish tourists on Friday evening when the incident occurred.
Witnesses reported that the group was swimming near a local resort beach when a powerful wave swept her away. She had arrived in Kenya on November 13, 2026, and was scheduled to depart on November 27.
Witnesses and police said she was overwhelmed by the waves and drowned. Her body was recovered from the water and taken to a local mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Police said they are investigating the incident.
Officials said the beach managers are taking measures to address such incidents.
This is because the region is experiencing a surge in local and international tourists because of the holiday season. Some of the tourists have no swimming experience, officials said.
The measures include continuous patrols along the beaches and guided swimming.
Police say there has been a surge of drowning incidents in the area in the past days hence the need for caution at large.
