A significant operation targeting illicit brewing in Muhoroni Sub-county has resulted in the seizure and destruction of over 3,000 litres of Kangara, a potent base for illegal alcohol.
The successful crackdown was carried out on Sunday, October 26, 2025, by a multi-agency security team composed of National Police Service (NPS) officers from the Chemelil Police Post and National Government Administration Officers (NGAO).
The team focused its efforts on Wagunga Village within Kamswa Sub-location, Nyagoma Location, in the Miwani Division. In addition to the massive liquid haul, officers also dismantled several distilling apparatus, effectively crippling key production points for the illegal brew.
The operation signals an intensified commitment by authorities to combat the dangerous trade. Speaking shortly after the seizure, the Chemelil Police Commander, John Mwangi, emphasized the gravity of the illegal activity.
“The production of illicit brew poses an unacceptable risk to our community, often leading to illness, blindness, and destroyed families,” Commander Mwangi told The Times. “This seizure sends a clear and non-negotiable message: the crackdown will be sustained until this menace is completely eradicated from Muhoroni Sub-county.”
The NPS further reiterated its resolve “to sustaining the crackdown on illicit brews and other illegal activities that endanger public health and safety.”
This is part of a broader, ongoing effort to curb the production, sale, and consumption of dangerous homemade alcohol across Kisumu County.
Authorities have confirmed that similar operations will continue throughout the county as they work to safeguard the community from the devastating effects of unregulated alcohol.
