At least 63 people have died and several others injured in a road crash involving four vehicles early Wednesday along the Kampala–Gulu Highway, police confirmed on X.

The collision occurred at about 12:15 a.m. at Kitaleeba Village near Asili Farm, said Police Chief Licensing Officer and Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety spokesperson SP Michael Kananura through the Uganda Police Force’s official X account.

The crash involved an Isuzu bus belonging to Nile Star Coaches, a Toyota Dyna, a Tata lorry, and another Isuzu bus operated by Planet Company.

“The driver of the Toyota Dyna, while overtaking a Tata lorry, collided head-on with the Isuzu bus heading to Gulu. A Toyota Hiace that was trailing the bus rammed into it from behind,” said Kananura.

He noted that reckless driving and poor judgment by the Dyna driver caused the crash.

Bodies of the deceased were taken to Kawolo and Mulago Hospital mortuaries for postmortem examination, while the injured are receiving treatment at Kawolo Hospital.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident and urged motorists to observe road safety rules and avoid dangerous overtaking.
