The government has confirmed that this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations will proceed as scheduled on Monday, October 20, 2025, at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County, despite the ongoing national mourning following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

In a statement issued on Saturday, October 18, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura said preparations for the national event were complete and that the celebrations would continue as planned.

“The Mashujaa Day national celebrations will go on as scheduled on Monday, October 20, 2025, at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County,” Mwaura said. “This follows the conclusion of the funeral of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, which will be held on Sunday, October 19, in Bondo.”

He noted that the event will pay tribute to Kenya’s heroes and heroines who have contributed to the nation’s progress and resilience, while also acknowledging Raila Odinga’s lifelong dedication to democracy and justice.

“The government recognises the late Right Honourable Raila Odinga as one of the country’s greatest patriots, and his legacy will be honoured even as the nation marks Mashujaa Day,” Mwaura added.

President William Ruto is expected to lead the celebrations in Kitui, where thousands of Kenyans are anticipated to gather for the annual commemoration.

Mashujaa Day, celebrated every October 20, honours the contributions of freedom fighters and other national heroes who played a pivotal role in Kenya’s independence and development.
