Sonko to Help Families Who Lost Their Loved Ones in Huruma Fire Tragedy
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has pledged immediate and comprehensive support to the families affected by a tragic fire in Mathare, Huruma Ward, which claimed the lives of eight innocent people.
The Sunday evening fire tragedy sent a wave of shock and grief through the community, prompting Sonko’s swift intervention.
“I am deeply saddened and heartbroken to learn of the tragic fire incident… which has claimed the lives of eight innocent people,” he stated, extending his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and friends.
A particularly devastating detail of the tragedy involves a loving mother who perished while holding her twin sons in a final embrace. Sonko highlighted this heartbreaking moment, noting it “speaks volumes of a mother’s love even in her last breath.”
To assist the community through this difficult time, the Sonko Rescue Team (SRT) has been dispatched to work directly with the affected families and community leaders.
Sonko committed to covering the full costs of a dignified send-off for all eight victims:
Sonko clarified that the Sonko Rescue Team will cater for the purchase of all eight coffins, provide transportation for all the bodies to various parts of the country for burial.
“In moments like these, we must come together as one people, united in grief and support,” he stated, assuring the families that the departed would be given a respectful send-off.
Sonko has also challenged the County Government to improve fire safety infrastructure in the capital, urging the current Nairobi Governor to take decisive action.
To prevent similar future calamities, Sonko strongly encouraged the current administration to implement his proposals for establishing a fire station in each of Nairobi’s 17 sub-counties.
He noted that during his tenure, he had ensured the establishment of fire stations in areas including Gigiri, Ruaraka, Kagundo Road in Eastlands, and Waithaka, which serves Westlands and Dagoretti.
“Let us keep the families in our thoughts and prayers,” Sonko concluded, as the community begins the process of mourning and recovery.
