The suspects in the dock at the Makadara Law Courts
By Gabriel Somba
A YouTuber – cum- gospel artist is facing charges of Cyber harassment after a preacher he hosted on his channel accused Jesus Winner Church of unbiblical practices and made ugly allegations against the church’s leader, Bishop Edward Mwai.
Mathew Mwangi Gitonga is charged alongside the preacher, Grace Wangui Ndinguri, who listed two other popular churches in Nairobi she claimed are involved in human sacrifice and brainwashing, during the interview on August 28, 2025.
“On August 28, without lawful excuse, you posted a video link on your YouTube channel that was indecent and grossly offensive, which affected the Jesus Winner Church,” reads the charges against them.
The two are charged with Cyber harassment contrary to section 27 (1) (a) (b) (c) of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act of 2018.
They denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Paul Rotich of Makadara law courts and were released on a cash bail of Sh20,000. Ndinguri told Rotich that she does not go to any church.
Gitonga was arrested in Nakuru on August 30 and taken to Kasarani police station after the church leadership made a report following the nuisance caused by the utterances made by Ndinguri and published by Gitonga.
Ndinguri was summoned and recorded her statement, and both were released on cash bail. During the interrogation, she told the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) that she is a Christ Ambassador and that she possesses a gift of prophecy and intercession.
She also told the detectives she intends to save lives and educate vulnerable Kenyans to prevent another Shakahola tragedy, in reference to the infamous Shakahola massacre, where hundreds were allegedly starved to death by a religious cult.
And at the same time, while being interrogated by the DCI, Ms Ndinguri accused the government of failure to shut down the rogue churches, forcing her to take up the responsibility of pacifying gullible members of the public from predatory churches and church leaders that she claimed are exploiting members sexually and financially, unabatedly.
The DCI wrote to the Communication Authority of Kenya (CA) on Monday to preserve the said clip on Gitonga’s YouTube channel to prevent the YouTuber from pulling it down to evade criminal culpability.
The DCI has also written to an organisation that will translate the interview from Kikuyu to English for assistance during the hearings of the case. The hearing of the case will begin on October 27 this year.
