A businessman who allegedly lost his temper and took away items belonging to Quiver lounge Eastlands after a sex worker he found at the restaurant confiscated his phone following a pay dispute is facing charges of theft.
Kennedy Mukonya was charged with stealing a wireless phone, a Bontel T1000 valued at Sh3000, an Electronic Tax Register (ETR) machine worth Sh26000 and decoration stones worth Sh500, contrary to section 268(1) of the Penal Code.
The suspect’s troubles started after he went to the club at around 5 am and “borrowed” a room to spend a good time with a random woman he found at the club, hoping to pay later after getting money upon charging his phone.
He gave a mobile phone he had allegedly stolen at the club as his collateral to get a room, but the same was rejected because it had broken parts, and the reception staff did not know that it belonged to their client, who was charging it at their counter.
Mukonya handed his phone instead as security and was allowed to use the room with the woman.
However, the woman declined to wait for money and demanded instant payment for her services before taking Mukonya’s SIM card from the phone, which he had left at the reception area.
But in the ensuing confusion, the club’s staff discovered that Mukonya had allegedly stolen another client’s phone. He later allegedly became unruly and took away the club’s items in protest after the woman left with his SIM card as compensation for her services.
Mukonya is now facing an alternative charge of handling stolen property in contravention of section 322 (1) (2) of the Penal Code because the items were allegedly recovered from him at the time of his arrest by the police.
“On August 18, 2025, at Umoja 1 area within Nairobi County, otherwise in the course of stealing, dishonestly received or retained, a wireless phone Bontel T1000, ETR machine and decoration stones knowing or having a reason to believe them to be stolen property,” the charge reads in part.
The suspect is also facing a charge of theft, where he is accused of stealing a mobile phone worth Sh28,000 belonging to Peter Nzomo, the customer who had left his phone charging at the counter while enjoying himself in the club.
Mukonya faces an alternative count of retaining Nzomo’s mobile phone in the course of stealing it while knowing it was being stolen or having reasons to believe it was stolen property.
He denied all the charges before Senior Resident Magistrate Wandia Nyamu of Makadara law courts. He was released on a cash bail of Sh100,000. The case will be mentioned on September 24.
